Minister of Transport Dato’ Sri Liow Tiong Lai disclosed that a meeting in Washington DC with Anthony Foxx, Secretary of Transportation of the United States of America was held yesterday to further solidify our stand to work together.
According to a press statement by Liow, the meeting was held following of the recent aviation tragedies and with a view toward improving aviation security.
"Malaysia appreciates the support of the US Government extended in the aftermath of MH370 and MH17 and for its support of a resolution before the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Council on Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 destroyed over Eastern Ukraine on 17 July 2014."
He said that specifically the ICAO Resolution strongly reaffirms the need for all States to comply with international law that prohibits acts of violence that pose a threat to the safety of international civil aviation and stresses the importance of all States assisting with the continuation and finalization of a full, thorough and independent international investigation into the incident.
Liow said that in light of these tragedies, it is clear that the international community must collaborate closely and take greater steps towards improving safety and security in civil aviation.
"On this score, I will be in Montreal early next week to attend the 203rd Session of the ICAO Council," he added.
Liow also pointed out that Malaysia intends to present its views and input to the ICAO Council, with a view towards seeking consensus on this matter.
"Among the matters I will put forward to the ICAO Council include the need to improve aircraft tracking by implementing real-time tracking as well as the need for sharing of information pertaining to flight risks," added Liow. - Sarawakiana
