KANGAR: Sarawak sounded an early warning to defend their overall champions title in wushu in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) when they grabbed two gold medals on the opening day of the wushu competition at the 17th edition of the Sukma at Dewan Rakan Sukan Kompleks Sukan Tuanku Syed Putra here Sunday.
Their exponents Liew Lik Kee and Amelia Su Leh Wern totally dominated their events. Liew, who was the last exponent in the men's Nanquan, overcame his nearest challenger, Chai Chwan Hau of Melaka, by just 0.02 points to clinch the gold.
He collected 9.58 points while Chwan Hau had to be satisfied with the silver after collecting 9.56 points.
"I am happy to deliver the gold. I was a little nervous that I might fail in this last Sukma for me," said the 21-year-old who hails from Miri.
The bronze was won by his compatriot Andy Chan Song Cong who garnered 9.54 points. Meanwhile, Amelia was in top form in the women's Changquan, scoring a high 9.57 points to capture the gold medal.
Tan Chew Yung from Kedah took the silver with 9.18 points while Penang's Aggie Cheah Ruey Shin settled for the bronze after collecting 9.14 points.
Melaka, Penang, Negeri Sembilan and the Federal Territories picked up a gold medal each. -- BERNAMA
