Facebook Teams Up With Samsung For New Phone

Facebook is reportedly working with Samsung to make a new smartphone.

Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg met with Samsung vice-chairman Lee Jay-yong at Samsung's headquarters in Seoul to discuss the venture, The Korea Herald reports.

While details about the phone's proposed features or a release date have not yet been announced, Facebook's previous attempts to crack the lucrative smartphone market have failed.

The social networking giant worked with HTC to release the HTC ChaCha and HTC First in 2011 and 2013, respectively.

The ChaCha was primarily designed for texting and integration with Facebook through a dedicated button to share content.

Barely a year after it was launched the phone was selling for $30 at retailers such as Big W, a fifth of its original price, and is no longer being produced.

The HTC First fared even worse, with phone retailer AT&T forced to drop the price of the phone from $99 to 99 cents just one month after its debut.

The pairing with Facebook could provide Samsung with a much needed boost, with the world’s largest smartphone maker suffering a third-quarter earnings collapse after an almost 60 percent drop in phone sales from last year.

More than 1 billion people use Facebook across a given month, according to the company’s website. - 9News
