Navy Considers Splitting Fleet For Better Maritime Operations

KOTA KINABALU: The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) is in the midst of restructuring its fleet to be divided into two; one for West Malaysia and another for East Malaysia operations.

RMN chief Admiral Tan Sri Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin said this would strengthen the maritime operations of the navy's Region 2 based in Kota Kinabalu naval base in Sepanggar here.

More ships are expected to come in as well as the formation of Region 4 at Bintulu in the pipeline, he told reporters after the decommissioning of the towing vessel KTD Kepah at the base here.

"We have identified a suitable land at Bintulu (Port)... We are confident we will be able to set up the Region 4 naval base there next year," he said, however did not say how many additional assets can be expected for the fleet here.

On the ceremony today, he said it was a starting point for the navy's 15-to-5 transformation plan, a cost effective plan to reduce from 15 to five classes of vessels in their armada as well as retire old ships that became too expensive to maintain.

He said they have yet to decide on what to do with the decommissioned ship.-NST
