'Alvivi' Receives Offer To Shoot Documentary in Singapore

KUALA LUMPUR 12 May - Controversial sex bloggers Alvin Tan and Vivian Lee‎ will be flying to Singapore to shoot a biographical documentary programme of themselves, next Monday.

Their request to fly to the country between May 19 till June 2 was approved, after a Sessions Court here today gave back their passports.

The couple's case, which was fixed for mention earlier, saw counsel Chong Joo Tian, who appeared for Tan and Lee, requesting for his clients' passports to be handed back to them for the duration of the shoot.

Chong told judge Abdul Rashid Daud that his clients had received job offers from a Singaporean film production company and were scheduled to conduct interviews with the local media there for the documentary.

After hearing submissions, Abdul Rashid allowed their application. However, he concurred with deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin‎ that the duo should not divulge on any ongoing case details while conducting their interviews.

‎On July 18 last year, Tan and Lee were charged at the Sessions Court with two charges over a purported publication of a seditious photograph on their Facebook page with the caption "Selamat Berbuka Puasa (dengan Bak Kut Teh... wangi, enak, menyelerakan!!!"(Happy breaking fast with Bah Kut Teh... fragrant, delicious and appetising!!!) with a halal logo.

The two charges were framed under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 298A(1) of the Penal Code.Section 298A(1) is an offence of causing enmity between followers of religions.

The duo was also charged with exhibiting obscene photographs on their blog, which falls under Section 5(1) of the Film Censorship Act 2002.They allegedly committed the three offences at Kuala Lumpur between July 6 and 12 last year.

On Sept 13 last year, they applied to the Sessions Court to strike out the second charge under section 298A (1).The Sessions Court and High Court dismissed their application.

However, on Apr 21, a Court of Appeal allowed an application by the sex bloggers, infamously known as "Alvivi"‎, to strike out a charge of causing religious enmity linked to an alleged upload of a controversial “Bah Kut Teh Ramadan” greeting.

The three-man panel, chaired by judge Datuk Wira Mohtarudin Baki, ruled that Section 298A of the Penal Code is not applicable and enforceable against appellants Tan Jye Yee, 26, and Lee May Ling, 25, who are non-Muslims.

The prosecution has filed an appeal at Federal Court over the Court of Appeal decision.Pending the appeal, the case at the Sessions Court was fixed for mention on June 13. - RakyatNews
