Tan Sri Peter Chin emphasised yesterday he would make it a point to attend the BN Council meeting when it sits to discuss Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras)’s application to join BN.
This is to make sure that Teras would never become part of the BN family, not even through the BN Plus route, said the SUPP president.
“As far as Teras is concerned, if they want to join BN, I am sure they will put in their application. When they put in their application, it has to be discussed by the BN council. I will be there (BN Council meeting).
“If after our (SUPP) TDC (triennial delegates conference) I am not there (president) anymore, somebody else will be there as (SUPP) president,” he told reporters covering the party’s 55th anniversary celebration at its headquarters here yesterday.
On the possibility of Teras joining BN through the BN Plus formula, Chin opined there was no reason for a BN Plus.
“The present situation is different from that in 1983. That time, there was a racial tone after the election involving the then Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS), but now it (situation) involves only a few people who are unhappy with their original parties.”
Chin said he believed SUPP would not be the only party to ‘strongly’ object to Teras joining the BN.
“The objection will not only come from SUPP, but also SPDP and PRS, I presume. I think other parties like MCA and some parties in Sabah will also oppose because they know what will happen to them if BN creates precedence by accepting Teras.”
On seats now held by former SUPP elected representatives, Chin said that based on moral grounds these YBs should resign and give back the seats to the party.
In any case, SUPP would never surrender any of its seats toTeras.
He reiterated that SUPP would defend its rights to these seats ‘at all cost, unless the party don’t want the seats’.
The seats he was referring to are Opar (held by Ranum Mina), Bengoh (Datuk Dr Jerip Susil), Engkilili (Dr Johnical Rayong) and Bawang Assan (Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh), which were among the six seats won by SUPP in the last state polls in April 2011.
“They (Teras) can claim whatever they want, but these seats belong to us because the present BN principle is that these seats belong to us.
“Unless we say, okay, we don’t have any winnable candidates. What to do if you don’t have any winnable candidates?” he quipped.
On another matter, Chin said he was always in touch with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak regarding party matters through his political secretary.
“They know what is going on. We don’t have specific meetings just to discuss about SUPP matters although I do meet him (political secretary) quite often.”
On the party’s TDC slated for this coming August, Chin said he would announce very soon whether he would be defending his presidency post.
“I will make the announcement at the appropriate time soon, but I want to make it very clear here that reports saying that there will be a contest for the president’s post in the coming TDC were all nonsense and merely speculations.
“I don’t think there will be any contest for the top post,” he said, adding he had identified several potential leaders to be included in the party line up. These potential leaders, he opined, are hard working, are conscious of the party’s struggles, principles and objectives.
“This group of people are worth picking for the CWC, not people who wavers … not people who are ‘takut’ (scared).” - Borneo Post
